Featured Program: Love Danville Education Council
The Love Danville Higher Education Council seeks to (1) represent the “student voice” in the community and (2) create a more positive image of the city on campus. In April 2017, the group hosted “Love Danville Week,” in which students left “love notes” around campus encouraging others to reimagine Danville. Through post-it notes, sidewalk chalk, stickers, window paint, t-shirts and social media, the students created a buzz across campus that resulted in a wave of students, faculty and staff also sharing why they #lovedanvilleva!

The students of the Love Danville Higher Education Council also understand that part of loving where you live is learning about where you live. Thus, the students decided to take part in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commission’s “King in Virginia” project to learn about and showcase the stories of Danville’s Civil Rights Movement. They will be conducting oral history interviews with participants and leaders from the local Civil Rights Movement, which they will turn into a written story for the project.

Featured MLK Day Activity: MLK Day of Service
Each year, Averett hosts a community-wide MLK Day of Service to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King. In 2017, volunteers prepared 10,152 meals for Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now), 200 Valentine’s Day cards for veterans and 90 scarves for children at Danville Redevelopment & Housing Authority sites. Participants included K12 and higher education students, AmeriCorps members and community members.

Featured Program: CNU Service Distinction Program
In an effort to promote student-led campus-wide community engagement, the Center for Community Engagement offers the Service Distinction Program to all students. The Service Distinction Honor bestowed upon students at graduation has served as an incentive for student enrollment through the Center. Student service track coordinators guide enrolled students to declare a specific policy area or population track at a sustained community partner location. Currently over 1,780 students are pursuing Service Distinction, equal to over 35% of total undergraduate enrollment.

Griffin School Partnerships

Featured Program: Leadership and Community Engagement Living Learning Community
The Leadership and Community Engagement LLC offers students the opportunity to live with like-minded peers interested in exploring social concerns, such as homelessness, youth empowerment and environment conservation, in order to become an active part of solutions through community engagement. Residents examine local and global issues through academic study and activism, with an emphasis on relational leadership, positive change and active citizenship. 42 students live together in a community of both upperclassmen and first year students. They are required to take a class together, volunteer as well as participate in programs and events around community engagement. Several students have gone on to oversee our Patriot Pantry– food pantry on campus, as well as coordinate leadership programs for middle school students at a local middle school.

Featured Program: NonProfit Fellows
The Nonprofit Fellows are a select group of students who earn a minor in Nonprofit Studies through a single semester immersion experience.  A close-knit learning community, the 20 – 25 Nonprofit Fellows are simultaneously enrolled in the three core courses of the Nonprofit Studies minor and have a 6-credit internship with a local nonprofit organization. Classes are taught by faculty, some of which are also nonprofit leaders at various community organizations.

Featured MLK Day Activity: MLK Day of Service and Leadership
As part of the George Washington University (GW) celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members are participate in a day of service, leadership development and interfaith dialogue. Through engageDC GW students serve with one of ten partner community organizations in the District of Columbia. Students provide service to meet the everyday needs addressed by the organization, such as tutoring, meal preparation, or program support and coordination. In addition, students work with the organizations to address issues that build the organization’s capacity, expand the mission or address infrastructure issues, such as program evaluation, volunteer management, web design, or developing new program areas. Students serve a full academic year and new gain perspective through leadership development and build a diverse network at GW and beyond campus committed to social justice. Featured program: Alternative Break Program
Preparing the JMU community to be educated and enlightened citizens committed to positive social change by providing reflective experiential opportunities with diverse community partners, JMU Alternative Breaks ranked number five from Break Away in the number of participants (625) serving over Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, May Break and approximately 12 weekends throughout the academic year.

Featured initiative: JMU Student Engagement Mini-Grants
Grants are awarded annually to students who are leading an engagement activity. Through an application process, recipients are chosen by the Student Government Association in conjunction with the Faculty Senate. In 2017-2018, student-led projects funded by the grants included a program in Uganda that promoted handwashing through education and infrastructure interventions, a fully conscious zero waste meal made from local ingredients that demonstrates to participants how they fit into the local food system, support and logistics for a community criminal justice conference, and a camp for local students to learn more about women’s and gender studies.

Christian/Community Service: The CSER program is a graduation requirement for all full-time, undergraduate residential students. Students are required to complete 20 hours of community service with a non-profit organization of their choice per semester. Students regularly serve on campus, in the Lynchburg community, and around the world. Last year, students completed over 500,000 hours of community service.

Campus Serve
Campus Serve is an opportunity to go out into the City of Lynchburg on a weekly basis and make a lasting difference in the lives of others through seeking engagement, building relationships, and performing service. Opportunities for involvement include manual labor projects, children’s ministry, adult Bible study, elderly care, and poverty alleviation.

Serve Lynchburg
Serve Lynchburg is an annual one-day, city-wide event in which Liberty University students, faculty, and staff join together with approved non-profit community partners in order to satisfy local community needs.  We wish to help the efforts of the organizations with both materials and volunteers in order to promote their individual missions within our community.  It is our desire that through the event, we would engage our local community by increasing connectedness and instilling a habit of working together through community engagement opportunities.

Impact Youth Worldwide is a ministry to share the hope and love of Jesus Christ. The ministry strives to make a deep lasting impact on each young person who attends the camps. Our purpose is to help them establish a moral foundation so they may have better hope for the future.

Featured Program: Meet Staunton
Meet Staunton introduces incoming first-year students to our local community, most importantly by giving them the opportunity to meet three individuals who work and/or live in Staunton. During Orientation the entire first year class is divided into groups of about 10 students, assigned an MBU employee and/or a local community member as leader(s), then fan out into Staunton to visit three predetermined sites: a locally-owned business or organization, a site of historic or cultural interest, and a restaurant. At each site a community member is waiting to greet the group, offering a description of the site and sharing some of his/her personal stories about Staunton. The goals of the program are to 1) acclimate students quickly to their new environment, increasing confidence and likelihood of subsequent personal exploration of the community, 2) raise awareness about the breadth of resources and interesting people in Staunton, as well as opportunities to get involved, 3) introduce students to three community members, and 4) encourage a sense of pride in community members about welcoming new students to Staunton, positively impacting campus-community relations. A post-activity written reflection consistently documents positive feedback from student participants about the friendliness of residents, interesting and attractive local sites, and the diversity of the community.

Featured Program: Hampton Roads Conference for Girls and Young Women
Old Dominion University (ODU) annually hosts the Hampton Roads Conference for Girls and Young Women, a free conference that attracts over 400 local young women participants. ODU students, faculty and staff as well as local community leaders serve as volunteers, mentors and workshop presenters. The Conference for Girls and Young Women provides a forum for girls, young women and their parents to expand their knowledge of critical issues by providing honest information, encouraging informed choices and good decisions, and offering opportunities for dialogue and exchange of ideas.

Featured Program: Radford Gives Back
Student volunteers pack bags with canned goods during the second annual Radford Gives Back food drive.
The Radford University campus community joined forces with the city of Radford to collect more than 15,000 food items for area school children.
On Oct. 24-25, 2017, students, faculty, staff and community members donated food as part of the university’s second annual Radford Gives Back food drive. The campaign helps replenish Bobcat Backpacks, a nonprofit organization founded in 2016 by three alumnae, Daniela Brunner ’96, Jenny Riffe ’03 and Jane Fisher ’94, ’00. The program provides underserved Radford City Public Schools (RCPS) students with weekend food during the school year and the summer.
Radford Gives Back was first introduced last year during the week of President Brian O. Hemphill’s inauguration. Radford Gives Back is now a proud tradition of the university.

We work to make a difference in our community and create service based leadership opportunities for our students through the Life More Abundant [LMA] Program.  The LMA program focuses on increasing awareness of issues of social justice, fostering leadership development, increasing community access, and instilling an ethic of civic responsibility in Randolph students.  This is accomplished through the following components: 1) weekend training retreats at the beginning of each semester, 2) weekly in-service trainings regarding issues of social justice and Lynchburg, 3) coordinating and leading Service Projects with community partners in Lynchburg, 4) monthly speakers from the community addressing issues of poverty and social justice, 5) attending two conferences, 6) and the alternative spring break program.

The Southern Virginia University Office of Service Coordination and Reporting seeks to promote SVU’s motto, “Learn that Life is Service.”  We work with community members and organizations as well as SVU students, faculty and staff to provide service opportunities that fulfill community needs.  We are excited to be piloting a new Service Learning program where faculty and students can experience learning through service. We are also currently partnering with a local elementary school to provide after-school enrichment programs. This winter and spring we are involved with several area colleges and universities in the Collegiate Challenge.  Together we are supplying materials and volunteer labor to build a house for the Rockbridge Area Habitat for Humanity.  In March of 2018 we are excited that Southern Virginia University is hosting a Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic to benefit individuals in need of medical assistance.

Students engage in a focused day of service completing community projects at over 26 community partner sites and completing close to 1800 hours of service in one day. Past locations include the Jubilee Family Development Center, Miriam’s House, Kids Haven, Adult Care Center, Gleaning for the World and Camp Kum-Ba-Yah.

Featured Activity: Regional Track and Field Event for Special Olympics

For over 20 years University of Lynchburg has partnered with Special Olympics to offer a regional track and field event for Special Olympics athletes.  The day includes field events, an Olympic Village with games and activities, interaction and pictures with James River Kennel Club dogs and an award ceremony for the athletes. The Office of Community Involvement and Alpha Sigma Alpha jointly host with other student volunteers from various organizations including Greek Life, Alpha Phi Omega, Bonner Leaders, Student Judicial Board and Athletics to assist in making the day special and fun for all involved.

Presentations of Learning have been a Bonner Center for Civic Engagement tradition for years at the University of Richmond, providing Bonner Scholars and other engaged seniors an opportunity to share the impact of community engagement on their learning, growth, and development.

Featured Program: East End Collaboratory
East End Cemetery is a historic African American burial ground in Richmond City and Henrico County, Virginia, where volunteers have been working to uncover long-buried headstones and reclaim the history of this community. In 2017-18, faculty from the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University began working together under the name East End Collaboratory. The Collaboratory’s mission is to support “the community effort to restore East End Cemetery by engaging students and faculty across disciplines and institutions. Our work entails the curation and documentation of African American history and culture in Richmond, as well as the reclamation of the cemetery site. Featured Program: VCU RamPantry
Virginia Commonwealth’s RamPantry, started by students in January 2014, provides nutritious meals for students in need. A member of the College and University Food Bank Alliance, RamPantry serves about 100 students each week and operates with the services of about 200 student volunteers, faculty, staff and faith-based ministries. Partners include Food Lion, Shalom Farms, Panera Bread, SoapBox Soaps, the VCU School of Dentistry, Relay Foods and the local food bank. The pantry not only supplies healthy foods but also toiletries and other basic supplies.

Featured program: STEP UP leaders

STEP UP (Students Together Engaging in & Practicing Ut Prosim) is the student leadership team that coordinates all VT Engage service trips. This team works closely with peers, VT Engage, and community partners to coordinate trips based on community-identified need and develop reflections to pair with each service experience. These trips range from half-day Get on the Bus trips to Campus Kitchen at Virginia Tech experiences to international immersion trips.

In addition to these hands-on experiences, leaders attend weekly meetings focused on developing new skills and leading impact service experiences for their peers. This curriculum builds students’ knowledge and expertise as they progress in the program. Throughout the experience, leaders are immersed in learning more about best practices for community engagement and trip coordination while studying and examining service, social and environmental topics.

Richmond Community by collaborating with our 50 community partners to complete numerous service initiatives. Students are placed at service sites based on interest, course of study and availability. These placements help to develop a lifelong passion for service and civic engagement, thereby strengthening community and university relationships. Community partners are selected annually and are invited to participate in Service Fairs where students can engage with community partners, interview, and commit to placements on the spot.

Each semester, VWU students go to local elementary schools to tutor and mentor students in the area of reading and math.  The partnership allows our students to mentor students who are at a high risk of dropping out and help excite the students in continuing with their education.

Featured Program: VWC Annual On-Campus Homeless Shelter
For one week each January, Virginia Wesleyan University hosts a shelter for homeless men and women in partnership with the Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless. Established in 2007 and founded by students, VWU’s Annual Shelter program is a collaborative effort of faculty, community partners, and students; however, it is staffed and managed primarily by student volunteers and provides a truly transformational experience for volunteers and guests. It takes place during the Winter Sessions academic term and is typically tied with an academic course on the issue of homelessness in America.  VWU’s Shelter program provides a unique opportunity for students to break down social barriers, look beyond stereotypes and make meaningful connections.
